You should do good.

I can’t tell you what you should do career wise, direction wise, if you should wear a red shirt or a blue dress today. These are things you’ll decide for yourself and (I’m sorry) you’re probably going to fuck it up. We all do.

But I can tell you that a life isn’t worth much if you don’t do some good with it.

Good is a broad term. I’ve been pretty damn happy with my life thus far and I attribute a lot of that to a few guidelines that I follow. Feel free to play along. They’re vague and open to interpretation, but I feel like a better person when I stick to them. Maybe you will too.

-Don’t be a dick.

-If you can help… do it.

-Treat others the way you want to be treated, as an equal and with respect.

-Be good to yourself. Try your best to make healthy choices and realize that you’re going to fuck that up sometimes.

-Try to realize the reality that NO ONE pays as much attention to you as you do yourself.

-Confidence and happiness goes hand in hand with not giving a fuck about what strangers think of you.

I’ve got more… but they really only apply to me.

First of all, you are a fuckin sweetheart! THANK YOU!

Secondly, other people suck. You are going to feel pressured to change for other people in one way or another for your entire life. This pressure can have a major effect on you depending on where you’re feeling it (i.e. from your family, friends, strangers, society, etc), but how much you let this pressure effect your decision making is something you can control.

No on has life figured out at 17, God, seriously?! WHO HAS IT FIGURED OUT AT 30?! No one. I was on a career/life path from 12 to 25 and completely changed direction. I’m still figuring it out. My dad lost his job a few years ago at 50something and has been trying to figure it out.

Baseline: Be kind. Constantly be trying to improve yourself. Learn as much as you can about the world around you. Try things that interest you. Be patient.

Yea, one of the things I regret most in my life is not starting it sooner. I kept waiting for other people to do the things I wanted to do and it took me too long to realize I shouldn’t wait. Who the hell knows when we’ll be gone. Life is too beautiful and exciting to wait to do the things you want to do.
